Duties and Responsibilities

The Magnetic Resonance (MR) Manager is responsible for maintaining and repairing all the nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR ) spectrometers and the associated computer network on the Loyola LSC , as well as training of all students, postdoctoral appointees, technicians and faculty in the safe and effective operation of the NMR spectrometers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Plans and directs implementation and administration of the Magnetic Resonance Facility at the Department of Chemistry of Loyola University Chicago.

  • Serves as the Departmental NMR expert, is available to the chemists and biochemists in the Department for consultation regarding the utilization of modern NMR techniques for the solutions of chemical and biochemical projects.

  • Is available for consultation regarding the design and implementation of NMR experiments for undergraduate pedagogy.

  • Has direct responsibility for the maintenance, calibration, and repair of all of the NMR spectrometers and the associated computer network on LSC .

  • Instructs students, postdoctoral appointees, technicians, and faculty in the safe and effective utilization of the NMR Facility, and conducts regular training sessions on the theory of NMR .

  • Participates in drafting proposals for funding of magnetic resonance spectrometers.

  • Develops, recommends, and monitors expenditures for maintenance, repair, and replacement of the NMR spectrometers and all other associated hardware and software.

  • Performs other duties as required.

    Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Masters degree supplemented with 3 5 years of related experience in a research or science lab.

A Ph.D. or highest terminal degree is preferred.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • A minimum of a Masters Degree in chemistry or a related field, thorough theoretical understanding of modern NMR spectroscopy, and experience in the practical application of modern NMR spectroscopic techniques is required.

  • Knowledge of how to adapt pulse sequences to optimize acquisition is preferred.

  • A Ph.D. in chemistry or related field is preferred.

Language Ability:

The ability to read and apply the information presented in professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations is required. The preparation of written reports and procedural manuals regarding the operation of the NMR spectrometers is required. The ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, students, and the general public is also required. Experience with proposal writing is of benefit.

Computation Ability:

A thorough theoretical and practical understanding of modern NMR spectroscopy is required. The ability to apply the computational concepts underpinning modern theoretical and experimental NMR spectroscopy is also essential.

Reasoning Ability:

The ability to troubleshoot radio frequency and digital components of NMR systems is required. The ability to utilize modern NMR spectroscopy for the structural elucidation of chemical and biochemical compounds is also required.

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses

Although no specific certificates or licenses are required, evidence of any hardware maintenance certification, and a UNIX Certification would have a significant impact on achieving on-going professional growth in this position.

Computer Skills

  • Experience with software system administration related to the NMR machines is essential.

  • Experience with advanced MS Word processing, MS Excel or Spreadsheets, and MS PowerPoint is required.

  • Experience with UNIX or Linux network administration as well as with UNIX shell scripting is helpful.
