SUMMARY OF ROLE

SunPower is seeking a Field Test Engineer for the Module R&D department. The role is on the Performance Engineering team. The Field Test Engineer will manage and execute a wide range of responsibilities at our Outdoor Test Facility at the SunPower R&D Ranch in Davis, CA. The facility is an R&D test site for PV modules and systems. The site includes indoor laboratory equipment, a workshop, an office, and an outdoor field test facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Manage and execute a wide range of work and responsibilities as part of operating our PV module test facility and running outdoor field studies.
  • Install (and help design) test systems involving PV modules, mechanical hardware, electrical wiring, power electronics, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.
  • Implement, configure, and operate data acquisition systems including data loggers, analog-to-digital IO modules, network connectivity, and data storage on company servers.
  • Design and install electrical systems (eBOS) to connect and operate PV test arrays. This includes inverters (up to 1500V and 20+ kW), wiring, and connections to transformers and circuit breakers. Ensure high standards for safety and quality.
  • Perform data quality control
  • Operate indoor and outdoor PV test equipment (flash tester, electroluminescence imaging, power/current/voltage monitoring, IV curve tracer, weather station, temperature sensors)
  • Facility operations and maintenance (with support from other team members)
  • Basic data analysis and reporting
  • Coordinate some day-to-day on-site work with team members such as junior engineers, interns, and contractors
  • Work with a cross-functional team of engineers to help drive the next generation of solar energy products
  • Innovate, and solve challenging technical problems with a positive, solution-oriented approach

RELATED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum requirements - The least amount of skills and training candidates must have to do a specific job. Candidates not meeting these requirements will not be hired for this position.

  • BSc or above with 2+ years work experience in a relevant engineering field (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.) or equivalent
  • Significant hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical systems and equipment
  • Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems
  • Ability to design and install electrical and mechanical systems that meet high standards for safety and professional quality
  • Good working attitude, able to multi-task a variety of projects
  • Fieldwork requires the ability to perform light construction outdoors, including handling PV modules up to ~50 lbs.

Preferred requirements (in addition to minimum requirements above)

  • BSc or above with 5+ years work experience in a relevant engineering field (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.) or equivalent
  • Significant or extensive hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical systems and equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems
  • Experience with solar PV technology
  • Experience with laboratory or field testing of physical technology or products, with high standards for measurement accuracy and precision
  • Experience with data analysis and computer programming
  • Capable of operating a forklift
  • Bonus: Professional certification such as NABCEP, CA C10 or C46, PE, or similar
  • Self-starter and comfortable with owning projects
