Position Description

COVID-19 CDC Reporting QA Epidemiologist

Purpose of Position
The COVID-19 CDC Reporting QA Epidemiologist serves within the Epidemiology Resource Center (ERC)
at the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). The purpose of this position is to assist with the collection
and quality assurance of COVID-19 investigation data to be reported to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC). The CDC Reporting QA Epidemiologist assists the team lead in COVID-19
surveillance, data management, and other grant activities. The position also provides additional
capacity to CDC Reporting Public Health Investigators in conducting COVID-19 case review.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
* Facilitate the compilation of COVID-19 case data through data cleaning activities to identify and
mitigate gaps in existing data before submission to the CDC
* Contact local health departments, healthcare provider offices, and laboratories to ensure
complete and accurate information is collected
* Conduct review of COVID-19 case investigations within the NBS surveillance system as part of
COVID-19 reporting to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
* Utilize medical record search tools to obtain additional information that can be included in
reported data
* Assist with tracking team metrics and using metrics to make data-driven decisions
* Provide additional capacity for routine surveillance coordination of COVID-19 as needed
* Responsible for the coordination and timely completion of grant activities
* Serve as a back-up to the other CDC Reporting QA Epidemiologist and/or CDC Reporting Team
* Perform related duties as assigned

o A bachelor's degree in a relevant field and ≥ 4 years of relevant public health experience.
o A master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences, or social
sciences) and ≥ 2 years' relevant public health experience, OR
o A doctoral-level degree in epidemiology or another relevant field, OR
o A graduate or professional degree in a health-related field (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD,
DVM, PhD, RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic
Intelligence Service, or CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship), OR

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Knowledge of the epidemiology and biology of infectious diseases, including COVID-19
* Knowledge of reportable infectious disease surveillance systems/processes, especially within
* Ability to conduct epidemiologic surveillance activities
* Ability to manage large datasets, perform data analyses, identify key findings, and communicate
those findings to a variety of audiences
* Ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders
* Ability to think critically about public health problems and develop collaborative solutions
* Advanced organizational and teamwork skills and ability to prioritize tasks efficiently
* Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Difficulty of Work
Incumbent utilizes basic knowledge of epidemiology and infectious disease to assist in epidemiologic
investigations and surveillance. Work is broad in scope and requires proficient time management skills
as well as excellent communication and customer service skills. Independent judgment is required to
carry out assignments.

Physical Effort
Must sit for extended periods of time working on computer.

Working Conditions
Work is performed remotely from home, but incumbent may need to appear at headquarters for
training or meetings.
