The Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health was formally created in 2012 and was named in recognition of a transformative gift by the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation. With strong connections to the IU School of Medicine and other health science schools on the IUPUI campus, the School of Public Health is poised to be a catalyst to help build a collaborative approach to improved public health in Indiana. The School of Public Health currently serves more than 600 students, employs over 25 full-time staff and is home to over 50 full-time faculty within the departments of Epidemiology, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Health Policy and Management, Global Health, and Biostatistics.

Job Summary

The Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health is currently recruiting Contact Tracers to serve the City of Indianapolis / Marion County area. A Contact Tracer interviews, evaluates, and monitors clients, provides education, guidance and isolation/quarantine parameters based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as Marion County Public Health recommendations for those individuals who meet case definition for a confirmed, suspect, or probable case of a communicable disease or a contact of someone who meets this definition. May conduct home visits to obtain or verify information. May be involved with contact tracing duties related to quarantine and monitoring of contacts. Performs other related duties as required.

  • Individuals hired into this position should expect to be working all or most of their hours in the field interacting with community members.
  • This position is supported on grant funding, therefore continued employment is contingent upon maintaining the current level of support.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and one year working/volunteering in an organization where there was interaction with the public either in person or via telephone.

Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.

Plus, the following skills and abilities:

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communications skills and ability to work well in a team.
  • Comfort using tablets, computers, and cell phones.
  • Skill in capturing information from case/contact interviews and entering data into assigned database.
  • Ability to read, understand, and implement referral procedures, which may change based on incoming data.
  • Excellent and sensitive interpersonal, cultural competency and sensitivity appropriate to the local community, and interviewing skills such that they can build and maintain trust with patients and contacts.
  • Resourcefulness in locating patients and contacts who may be difficult to reach or reluctant to engage in conversation.
  • Basic skills of crisis counseling along with understanding of when to refer individuals or situations to medical, social, or supervisory resources.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the city of Indianapolis, Marion County, or one of the neighborhoods within the geographic area.
  • One year of course work in a college or university in one of the social or biological sciences, health, or a related field/related work.
  • One year of experience performing outreach work and/or interview/investigation work in a local agency.
  • Experience working with CRM database.
  • Medical and/or public health background.
  • Multi-lingual or bi-lingual; speaking English plus one or more languages utilized within Marion County populations.
  • Experience (work, educational, and/or volunteer) in public health, medical, social work, or community-based programing.

Working Conditions / Demands

Ability to be on the telephone for extended lengths of time. Ability to work on a computer for several hours a day. Abilty to drive throughout Marion County, Indiana to locate COVID19 cases and contacts. Physical mobility is needed. Ability to navigate city sidewalks and residences that may not have adequate ADA compliant features. This individual will be working in diverse neighborhoods and interacting with a multitude of cultures.

Note: The Contact Tracer will work remotely, with only occasional visits to the main office location. Job duties will generally be conducted within the City of Indianapolis/Marion County area.

Work Hours

Work hours will vary, with shift assignments made on a weekly or biweekly basis. Work will normally be restricted to the hours of 7am to 9pm, with exceptions allowed for case specific assignments. Work days will vary and may include weekday and weekend assignments.
